Frequently Asked Questions
We believe in transparency and thoughtful formulation. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive about our skincare, shipping, returns, and how to get the most out of your products.
Yes! If you’re in the North Houston area, you can opt for local pickup. Use the code LOCAL at checkout to remove shipping costs. After placing your order, we’ll contact you to arrange a convenient time and place to meet.
We craft our products in small batches without synthetic preservatives, so shelf life can vary slightly by formula. As a general rule, most of our tallow-based products are best used within 6–12 months. Some items may last longer—especially when stored in a cool, dry place or refrigerated.
For the most accurate guidance, we recommend checking the product page for each item’s specific shelf life.
To extend the life of your products:
– Always use clean, dry hands or a spoon/spatula to scoop product
– Avoid introducing water into the jar
– Keep lids tightly closed between uses
– Store out of direct sunlight
Refrigeration is not required, but it can help maintain consistency and extend freshness—especially in warmer months.
Absolutely. Natural products like ours may soften or melt in high heat, especially during summer months. Simply place it in the fridge or let it rest at room temperature to re-solidify. The texture may change slightly, but the benefits remain the same.
Ours are not whipped. We leave our tallow balms in their natural balm or cream-like state, which gives you a denser product and more actual balm per jar.
While whipped tallows can feel light and fluffy, they also introduce more air, which can reduce the volume of product you’re actually getting. We’ve chosen to keep ours unwhipped to offer a more concentrated, long-lasting product.
That said, some people love the texture of whipped tallow—and that’s totally fine! Our formulas are simply crafted to work best in their unwhipped form, especially since we infuse them with slow-steeped botanicals and skip essential oils.
Tallow is rich and deeply nourishing, and it’s actually very compatible with the skin’s natural oils. That said, it’s important to always apply to clean skin, especially if you’re acne-prone. Use a gentle cleanser and avoid layering over dirt, sunscreen, or heavy makeup to keep pores clear and happy.
We take extra care with every small batch, infusing real herbs, resins, and roots for weeks before blending. We don’t rely on essential oils, fragrances, or shortcuts. Each balm, oil, or mask is formulated with sensitive skin in mind — even for babies, expecting mothers, and those with chronic skin concerns.
We want you to love what you purchase. While we can’t accept used items, we do evaluate refunds on a case-by-case basis. Please email us at support@oursimplethings.com and visit our Refund & Returns Policy for details.
We get this question a lot — and it often comes down to misunderstanding how tallow behaves on the skin. Grass-fed tallow closely mirrors the structure of our own sebum, which is why it can be so nourishing and well-tolerated. That said, its fatty acid profile is rich in saturated fats, which can be misunderstood as “clogging” — especially if applied to already congested or unclean skin.
That’s why clean skin is key: applying any balm, even water-based ones, over unwashed or occluded skin can trap debris and cause issues. We always recommend using a gentle cleanser and clean, dry hands or a spoon before applying.
To balance this, our formulas are thoughtfully paired with pasture-raised emu oil — a rich source of omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids — which helps improve absorption and soften the saturated fat content of the tallow. This unique blend gives you a whole-food skin lipid matrix that delivers hydration, calms inflammation, and supports barrier repair — without relying on essential oils or synthetic additives.
Yes — many of our products are made without essential oils or synthetic ingredients, and are gentle enough for sensitive skin. For babies, we recommend Rosebud Tallow Balm, Wildwood Salve, and Simple Lip Balm.
If your baby is experiencing eczema with open or irritated skin, we recommend Wildwood for its soothing touch. For general baby skin or dry patches, Rosebud is an ideal option.
Grounded Balm is not recommended for use on babies unless directed by a healthcare provider due to its strength and magnesium content. If you’re using Grounded postpartum, we recommend applying it after nursing rather than before. While it is safe if trace amounts come into contact with your baby, it is not intended for direct use on baby rashes or skin conditions.
Most of our formulas use grass-fed tallow and emu oil for their skin-restoring benefits and are not vegan. However, if you’re looking for plant-based options, try our Radiance Facial Oil and Revive Face Mask — both are completely vegan and botanical.
We don’t use peanuts or tree nuts in our products, but some formulas do include Nilotica shea butter, which may be a concern for those with shea allergies. If you’re allergic to beef or emu oil, please avoid products that contain these. Some of our formulas use tree resins, so be sure you don’t have an allergy to that tree type before use. All ingredients are clearly listed on each product page. Always perform a patch test and consult your provider if you have concerns.
